To foster intercultural exchange and dialogue between members of all ethnic groups in Mitrovica and thus to contribute to the reconciliation process between Kosovo-Serbs and Kosovo-Albanians.
This project is not a direct part of the German Development Cooperation‘s portfolio, but is treated as an individual measure, directly commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). It is implemented by the Diakonie Kosova and aims at fostering peaceful interactions between Kosovo-Albanians and Kosovo-Serbians in Mitrovica and North Kosovo. The Youth Center is supposed to offer a protected space to youngsters/children in which intercultural learning through so-called ‘low-threshold activities’ can take place.
It is still too early to claim the achievement of any of the intended results; nevertheless, first pilot activities (karate, dancing, language games) have been conducted as first trust-building measures and as such seem to have reached members of all ethnic communities and youngsters/children from both parts of Mitrovica; Among the participants, there were 60 % Kosovo-Albanians, 26 % Kosovo-Serbians and 14 % Bosnians. The gender ratio was balanced.
